Wrath of the Lich King Heroics: The Coldarra

There are two Lich King heroics in the Coldarra; The Nexus (also known as bane of my life), and The Oculus.

Before Patch 3.3, Oculus was one of the least run instances.
Its vehicle fight was clunky and hard, the drakes didn’t scale with gear and the achievements felt near on impossible to do unless you had frankly epic amounts of patience.

The Nexus
I have nightmares about the Nexus. I genuinely hate the place. I think it’s because it was one of the first instances I ran as a heroic, a newly dinged 80, and I went through it too many times looking for the War Mace of Unrequited Love to ever want to go back.
There are five bosses on heroic mode resulting in 5 triumph badges for every run.
There are 3 achievements here.
Chaos Theory – complete this by kiting Anomalus down off his slope. There is quite a lot of damage taken here from him as time goes on so your healer needs to be on the ball. The tank needs to be closest to him at all times, because his chain lightning does the most damage to the person closest to the boss. Ideally a tank with good AoE taunts and DPS that know not to AoE as soon as the rifts spawn!
Intense Cold – keep jumping! Don’t let the debuff get any higher than two stacks. Ideally having a priest or a paladin in your party to dispel magic when you get hit by the chains is great, but the Stonekeepers Shards insignia or a free action potion will also keep you moving.
Split Personality – there are lots of complicated strats for this achievement but at the moment, with peoples gear as high as it is, simply burning her down in seconds will work. On a run for our winter hats last week, we managed to burn her down in 11 seconds on normal mode. That may have been down to us using two DKs and two army of the deads though…overkill much?

The Oculus
The Oculus is the second of the two Coldarra five man instances. Before Patch 3.3 it was universally hated by the majority of wow players. The vehicle fight was obnoxious, and it was almost always death for a PuG. Getting the achievements pretty much required a guild run. However they nerfed it in Patch 3.3, the drakes scale massively and everything is just way easier.
In fact, in my second run since Patch 3.3 I picked up two achievements; Experienced Drake Rider and Make It Count. There are 4 bosses netting you four badges per run, and 5 available achievements.
These are:
Amber Void: There are tons of strategies for doing Amber Void, but the recommended is to use 2 red and 3 greens. Tank the Ley Guardian with a red, using “evasion” on enrage. Use the second red as a constant “martyr”. The three greens keep up constant stacks, and purely heal the martyr tank. Obviously, comments from others on better strategies are appreciated!
Emerald Void: It seems commonly accepted that simply taking 5 rubies into this and pwning the Ley Guardian works. I wouldn’t know…I’m missing the achievement as of yet *cough*
Ruby Void: Three ambers and two emeralds for this. Easily do able, try and time your “time stops” – doing it over vent is ideal – and he’s squishable with ease.
Make it Count: since Patch 3.3, this is an easy achievement if you run the instance with no wipes. Hop from the first boss to killing the Ley Guardian in less than twenty minutes to get this.
Experienced Drake Rider: simply complete the instance using a different coloured drake each time. This is only dificult if you get pigeonholed as a healer – green drake, tank – red drake, situation. Otherwise, three runs on three colours will net you the achievement.

  1. I have HEARD (though, like you, I like personal experience) that if you do all 5 amber drakes that’s the fastest way to drop him — and you’d get two achievements at once then, too. If you’re coordinating time stops over vent already anyway, why not try two for the price of one? You should be able to keep him pretty much constantly locked down (again, in theory, though some in my guild have reported success with this method).

  2. Gah. Occulus *twich*.

I find the War Mace of Unrequited Love particularly hilariously named.

I mean when I see “war mace” love, unrequited or not, is not the first thing that springs to mind!

  3. Tam – you are dreadful.
That hadn’t even OCCURRED to my fragile mind until you said that.

Thanks for the advice Ihra. I’m hoping to get a guildie for 4 along to actually help me try and grab a couple of the achievements so I’ll try that one out.

    Thanks again
    Soph
