A little bucket list update!

Ooo it’s a long time since I started my bucket list so I thought maybe now would be a good time to do an update!

My General goals were:

Have 9 level 85s – I’m now quite comfortably progressing with this. I’ve got 8 level 85s (having dinged my second priest) and I’ve got my mage up to 65. My second druid is still languishing at 41 however.

Have all professions maxed out – this goal is complete!

Have experienced all Horde starting stories – I’ve changed this to level 30 after talking to the ever knowledgeable Rades about horde quest progression. I’ve got my blood elf warrior to 30, where she now stays, and my goblin hunter to 17.

Have 50k gold – sitting on just over 40k now. Whether I’ll hit 50 for mists or not is an unknown, but I’d like to.

Next we’ve got Elsen, my main.

Always my main, always will be, Elsen is of course the most important character in my roster. She will be the first picked up and levelled when Mists is released.

My goals for her pre-Mists are:

Achievement Points:

- have the most achievement points in guild – currently sitting in second, I have about 400 points to go to catch up on the leader. A secondary – highly unlikely – goal would be to hit 13,000 achievement points. - this isn’t going as well as hoped! I’ve actually been overtaken and am sitting in third now, still static at about 400 points behind the leader. I’m aiming instead for 13000 points, rather than guild first.

PvP:

- complete my Cataclysmic PvP set – although this will not be 100% possible because I doubt I’m going to hit 2200 to get the heroic versions. Just the basic S11 to the extent I can achieve it will do me.  I’m going alright on this. I’m missing belt, boots, trinkets, 1 ring and a neck – so well on the way to completion.

- hit 1550 in 2v2  - as I no longer do arena, it’s looking like all of these arena goals are unlikely, so I’ve scratched them off the list.

- hit 1550 in 3v3

- complete the total Master of Wintergrasp achievement – I’m just missing the 6 minute win and the generic wins.  - I went through a phase of making an effort to log for WG but that has slacked off again. It’s tedious and I forget to log in, basically. I could probably do with picking up an add on that triggers a timer.

- complete the total Master of Tol Barad achievement – Here just got a couple of easy enough achievements and then the Veteran to do.  as above, I could knock this one out in a month if I tried. I really should make the effort.

Reputation:

- Max out my Steamwheedle Cartel reputation. I’m sitting at revered with all of them, so time to start grinding some pirates! - not really had any progression on the pirates so still at revered.

- Max out my Hydraxian Waterlords reputation - managed this! Hit exalted last week and got my Sulfuras at the same time. Very satisfying I have to say.

Achievements:

- mop up and complete the entirety of the Wrath of the Lich King raiding achievements in that tab. - I inch ever closer to this all the time. I’ve got LK 25 HC now and my ICC meta, I just need a couple of odd Ulduar 25 achievements and then it’s mostly ten man.

- try my best to finish Salty  - I never fish. I’m lazy and I slack terribly.

- grab Earth, Wind & Fire on 10 man - still not even *looked* at this although I may suggest it to our RL for a nice evening finish one night in a normal raid *hint hint*

- net 25,000 Honor Kills – Sitting on 13k at the moment, I have’t PvPed much recently as my time has been spent on my alts. Not sure if 25k is achievable pre Mists or not.

- net 25,000 Valor Points - sorted – picked this up early January.

- try and grab as many PvP achievements as possible (ambiguous I know!) - as above, my PvP has been lacking recently.

- finish up LK 5 man tab, and Cata 5 man tab - got some plans in the works to go back through and clear out some of these, so hoping to get this done over the next month or so.

- finish off the Battered Hilt questline & enough tokens for the Argent Pony. - I am currently in the process of bribing my friends to come help me with this. I really should get on it.

Pets & Mounts:

- farm up to 175 pets if possible (166 at the moment) - currently sitting on 171 pets so very close! I got my last missing crocolisk the other day from the daily, and one more DMF pet. My last four will probably be made up of the Darkmoon Zeppelin (last I need to get all DMF pets), Legs (Children’s Week), the Gregarious Grell (TCG) and then either the Gundrak Hatchling or the Festival Lantern (the horde side Lunar Festival pet). Once I’ve got those everything else is a “grind” and therefore unlikely to be undertaken by me because I am lazy.

- farm up to 125 mounts if possible (116 at the moment) – I’ve passed this goal! I’m now sitting on 132 mounts. I’m not going to set a new goal pre-Cata, I’ve got more than enough.

Finally we have the alts

I had a bit of an LFR burnout and stopped running it, which means all of my level 85s are pretty much static where they were left.

This point forward:

I need a bit of a plan of attack from this point forward. This is (in this order of priority, providing me with a nice handy list to tick off):

Alliance Levelling

- Get my mage to 85, get my druid to 85

Horde Level 30s

- Goblin to 30, Orc to 30, Tauren to 30, Troll to 30, Undead to 30

Level 85s

- Sapphrina “finished” (transmogged with appropriate title), Baeletha finished, Nyoma finished, Ellenaie finished, Corin finished, Issabela finished, Yessika finished.

Mopping Up

- achievements, pets, et al.

So, I think I’ve made quite a decent bit of progress but there’s still LOTs to do. I need to get on the mage and push her to 85 and then get on my horde really. How is everyone else handling their Cataclysm bucket lists?

A Bizarre Long Strange Trip – Part 2

Last time I talked about starting WoW and experiencing raiding for the first time.

So, I was healing with another tree (occasionally) and this holy paladin, a chap named Zalduun. Me and Zal spent a lot of time in game together. We chased old achievements and talked for hours. He supported me as a friend through one of the most harrowing times of my entire life. Being forced in to non consensual sex by your “partner” and being punched/hit on a daily basis was pretty god damn awful and without his friendship I don’t know how I would have survived. In June 2009 I moved home to live with my dad – he was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and is at risk of a stroke as well as having a plethora of other health problems. Moving out of the city was the best thing I ever did. Suddenly, I was away from Stephen. Even though geographically I was only a few miles away, he couldn’t get to me (didn’t drive) and couldn’t find me. I was almost free. I managed to find the courage – and I’m eternally proud of myself for doing so – to end things, and I broke things off with him. I was free and single again, but weak and broken.

Lewis – Zal – helped me through it all. He looked after me when I cried, he kept me company late at night and he was genuinely just the sweetest, most wonderful friend I could ever have asked for. I am an only child with no siblings and Lewis is to me, a brother. Sometime around here – to be honest this section gets blurry, probably because the real life stuff overtook somewhat – I decided I was unhappy in Respice Finem. Their poor officer structure, management, the lack of progress, the in fights…it all got too much and I couldn’t be bothered to sit through it – I had enough going on. I reapplied to Flames of the Phoenix and they took me back. I was absolutely thrilled, although I was upset to be leaving Zal.

Guild wise, however, I was much happier. I raided ToC with them, and eventually convinced Zal to come and join me. He joined Flames as well and we developed a raid team, let by our lovely Scottish raid leader Nyo, that progressed through Icecrown Citadel on ten man, twice a week. We developed as an awesome healing duo that had this fab synergy and that worked together really, really well. As a guild we pottered slowly through Icecrown, experiencing each kill as a massive victory. I loved Flames and was really happy there, and in November 2009 was promoted, alongside Zal, to officer level. The previous GM stepped down and Nyo took her place and between the three of us we essentially ran the guild. And we were, in my eyes, a success. We carried on downing bosses at a slow but happy rate, and reached 11/12 (normal, ten man) sometime in May 2010. Unfortunately at this point the numbers started to drop, and we weren’t pulling in what we needed to progress further to the Lich King. Myself, Nyo and Zal tried our best to revitalise the guild but this unfortunately caused drama as the ex-GM and one of the “veteran” officers (who was at one point done for harassment of a female guildie so wasn’t exactly what I’d call a well-rounded individual) weren’t happy with the changes we were making. Apparently our rebranding (a new logo/colour scheme for the forums) of the guild and our changes (we tried to discover who had original ownership of the forums so we could tidy up the member list, etc etc) caused too much upset and they both decided to “bow out” completely. This ridiculous reaction to the changes we tried to make, alongside with the lack of raiding made me realise that I wanted more from the game, and so I made the decision to move.

I applied to a guild called Praetorian Guards, who were 3rd on the server for progress and at 8/12 HC 25 man. There couldn’t have *been*a bigger difference between the two guilds and I almost can’t believe I applied now, when I look back on it. But I write a damn good application, and I got in. Again, I was thrown into raiding at speed and for the first couple of weeks I struggled – I was anxious and frightened of failing my trial. After the month long trial period however, I passed. Zal joined me once more and he too passed his trial, and we were healing together again, as part of a 25 man team, not a ten man. It was incredible to see my ability and my experience sky rocket up again. I became proud of my skills and my abilities but as time went on more and more disenfranchised with the guild itself. The way O discussed one of her guilds reminded me a little of PG – it was like on the surface everything was perfect, but underneath, it was a mess. There was a large amount of nepotism present in the officer core, and they were completely against taking suggestions or feedback. I remember sending a long, really long, heavily detailed PM to a selection of the officers practically begging for a revote of class leaders and a shuffle of the officer core. It got rebuffed by a couple of them and ignored by the rest. In a way this was one of two final straws for me. I had previously over a couple of months got really close to one of the paladins we raided with called Andy – although I knew him as Jakey. I absolutely *adored* him. I was besotted. Unfortunately he realised this pretty quick and…well I suppose he indirectly took advantage of it, although I knew full well what was going on, inside. We flirted a lot and messed around, but at the core of it was, in my eyes, a true genuine friendship that I miss to this day. We used to sit up until 4am just talking and talking, about anything and everything. Our senses of humour matched and we gelled. He made me giggle and that was amazing in my eyes. He never felt the same way about me as I did about him though, and eventually we argued and fell out. A lot of the blame can be placed on me – I should have a) protected myself better and b) not acted so stupidly when it came to an end.

I also rebounded, badly, and ended up, in October 2010, starting a relationship with a guy from the guild named Craig. Craig, bless him, never did anything wrong. He was sweet and kind and nice and a lovely genuine guy, but I was directly rebounding off unrequited lust. We saw each other quite a bit and he allowed me to keep the independence that I so coveted in a relationship after my previous two, whilst still being very supportive and, deep down, very kind.

However, the aforementioned pointless crush on Jake alongside my dislike for the officer core in PG meant that I wanted to leave. I was no longer happy in the guild so I told Zal I was going to go and I looked off server for a guild that could match the hunger I’d found for hardcore progression raiding. Craig suggested Draenor. As a realm it was more advanced than Terenas and it was where he’d originally started off – he had friends there. I decided – why the hell not – and off we went. We joined the guild Adept. A week later we left – briefly – for a tiny guild that Craig used to be part of which he wanted to revitalise. Unfortunately that never came to fruition and luckily Adept took us back – this time equipped with 3 other raiders (2 moonkins that had felt about PG the same way we did and a paladin tank who we’d become friends with on Draenor) and 2 socials (Craig’s close friend from home, and Zal.)

Things in Adept went well. Within a couple of months I had taken on the role of Class Leader and Recruitment Officer, and was happy. We were well into Cataclysm now and raiding T11. I had a group of friends who I spent a lot of time with, and although the guild started to struggle raiding wise (we were having a really hard time downing Heroic Atramedes and Heroic Maloriak – although both went down repeat kills just didn’t come easily), I was happy around my friends. Unfortunately however I made a mistake at this point and started to get to know a guy called Simon. Simon was relatively new to the game and new to Adept, but in my efforts as an officer to make new people feel welcome, we started to get to know each other. I found out about his history and the fact he was in a wheelchair, and that he spent most of his time online. He showed me photos of him before the accident and to be honest, I thought he was gorgeous there and then. I wasn’t happy in my relationship – which again was no massive fault on the part of either me or Craig, when I ended things he said he was sorry – he’d got complacent because he was happy. But I should have never entered in to things in the first place really. Most days and every night me and Simon spent talking, and one day he told me he had feelings for me. I was falling for him incredibly quickly and I decided I had to finish things with Craig, so I did. I’ve never, ever cheated on anybody and I never ever would. I did what I thought was right – even if nothing was to come of me and Simon, I couldn’t have feelings for one person whilst being in a relationship with another.

We got together and things got very intense very quickly. I’m mostly going to gloss over this section because I’m still weak and it still hurts. But Simon was – because of his physical condition, the way it had happened, his massive issues around guilt (to summarise, he was driving, there was a death) – not a happy man, and he found one of the most challenging things about our relationship the actual act of loving someone. I can’t, however much I’d like to, slag him off and go on about the myriad of verbal abuse I suffered that caused me to plunge into such an awful, awful depression where I couldn’t find a way back out because for some reason I can’t hate him. I hate myself for letting him affect me in such a way, but I can’t hate him. I don’t, in all honesty, hate anyone really, except myself. I’m still the only person that he’s met online whose seen him after the accident.

One of the things Simon did do, though, was convince me to move my characters Horde. We joined a guild called Deliverance that was itself struggling. He said it would be a fresh start for us, for me and him, and we could grow and be happy as a couple in our own right – not as in “that horrible Simon who stole Sophie off Craig” – which seemed to be the general feeling in the guild. Unfortunately however it wasn’t, as I got more and more unhappy. Eventually I quit Warcraft completely after Simon told me he didn’t want me in the game anymore because I was too awful to be around. I left Draenor and swore never to go back. Elsen was a tauren – which was horrible – and I was a mess.

We can fast forward several months now to September 2011. I was back on Twitter, trying to rebuild my life and my brain and myself, when I got to thinking about playing Warcraft again. Demeternoth, a wonderful, incredible, exceptional lady, listened to my requirements: Somewhere quiet. Somewhere I know nobody. Somewhere I can play with nice people, but not raid hardcore. Somewhere there are genuine people who won’t judge me on my past. Somewhere I can find some friends. Somewhere Simon can never, ever find me. She recommended Jane Doe to me, and recommended Terokkar.

I couldn’t even log on myself the first time. I wanted to forget the past year *so* badly. Zal, who has stuck by me through everything, logged on for me, used a screenshot of Elsen to make her back the way she used to be, and placed her somewhere I knew. I turned on the game, logged on and there she was. As herself, with that long silver hair that’s never changed. I was me again and that was the start of getting back to being the old me. Getting back to being happy and being confident and enjoying myself and enjoying my life again.

And now where am I? I’m in Jane Doe, on Terokkar, and I’m really really happy. I have a wonderful, incredible raid team and wonderful, incredible friends. I have great guildies and people who I have loads in common with, people who make me giggle and people who I can sit up with until 3am on Mumble just chatting about life, the universe and everything. I have someone who I can make “that’s what she said” jokes with who laughs at them with me!! I love my guild, and I love my friends.

To be honest, I’ve been absolutely petrified about writing these two posts.

Until Christmas I mostly spent my time in game on my own, or with Zal. I just pottered around on my own, enjoying WoW again by myself. I feel like over the past 2 and a half months I have made some friends however that are truly special, special people. I was petrified of writing these posts because I didn’t want them to think less of me because of my past, because of Simon, I guess? I don’t even know why. It’s almost like the effect he had on me has made me so frightened that maybe I truly am this diabolical human being that just doesn’t *deserve* friends – especially the ones I have now.

I hope that’s not true and I hope the people that I spend my evenings with now understand how great they are and how honoured I am to be their friend and don’t change their opinions of me too much based on this. It’s taken a huge amount of courage which I didn’t think I had to write this and I don’t know what’s going to happen now.

But anyway,

Signing off

Sophie.

A Bizarre Long Strange Trip – Part 1

Once I started writing this I realised it was just too long to fit in one post, so I’m doing it in installments. This is part 1 – day 1 on Warcraft -> Respice Finem.

When I first saw the “then and now” meme circulating, I got my grumpy face on. This is because during the transfer of my data from my old PC to my new wonderful PC, I lost 3 years worth of screenshots. Pretty god damn disheartening to be honest, I’ve had a lot of history in this game. So I backed out from doing it and looked at Elsen as she is now, happy with where she is right now.

But then this afternoon I read this post by O and decided that you know…I really liked that interpretation of it. And I would do my own. I don’t know if I can be quite as open and honest as she was because there are some things that still a) massively hurt and b) I’m not sure if I want people to know because I’m…not necessarily “ashamed” of them but I know I regret some of the mistakes I’ve made, especially when I look at myself now. I suppose what my mistakes have taught me more than anything is how weak I am at times.

So, how did Elsen begin? The Christmas holidays of 2007 I had a lot of free time. I used to be really quite heavily involved in the rock music scene in Manchester – I wrote for 3 different music websites at one point and was either reviewing CDs or out at gigs the majority of nights. And on one of the forums (which I believe is still creaking along vvvvvvery slowly although I don’t know) someone had an off topic thread, about World of Warcraft. So I downloaded the trial version. I started a mage, a human mage, called Sophierach (I’d never ever played an MMO before, or even anything similar to this. I was an N64/Wii girl and that was it) and I set off. It was night time when it was day time for me (some of you may have clocked what took me 5 days to already) and day time when it was night for me. I loved the game, although I had no idea what I was doing. I remember standing in Goldshire and thinking it was so RUDE of this person sat on the floor with <AFK> above his head to not respond to me. I remember asking in /say how I saved the game, because I wanted to stop. The whole idea of my data living on some server somewhere just puzzled me. I remember Elwynn forest, barely, and I remember Westfall. I think I reached level 16, although I can’t 100% remember.

A few days after deciding that this trial version made me want more, I went off to the PC shop (Curry’s, to be precise) and bought myself the Battlechest. I went home, and tried to input my CD key. But I couldn’t. Because I had somehow ended up downloading the American trial version and had spent the past 5 days playing on an American server. No word of a lie. What a tool. So, I grumpily removed that account and that copy of WoW and started the long install, burying myself in the companion guide in order to pick my next character.

The Horde? Well they were out. They were all so UGLY! Undead? Trolls? Tauren??? Good lord no. Humans – they were out. I’d just done the starting zone once and thought I might get bored doing it again so quickly. Gnomes and Dwarves – well they’re both short, and …well I’m tall. I wanted to play someone tall. What did that leave me with? The night elves. Although Burning Crusade was out I thought I had to start with just one of the original races and didn’t actually install TBC until a few months after. I looked at each of the available classes. Druid jumped out at me straight away. I could shapeshift and be a CAT?? I could be a TREE?? What was this MAGIC. So a night elf druid it was. Impatiently awaiting the final install I logged on and started to design my character. Elsen, long silver hair and “don’t fuck with me” face was born. I entered the world on the realm Terenas, as it was “recommended”. I just…clicked the top of the list. That sort of thing meant nothing to me at this point.

And into the world I went. I don’t remember my first guild but I remember it being massive and I remember a level 70 came and helped me in a quest in Darkshore. *insert old woman with stick here* – When Darkshore was a horrendously long thin zone, there were harpies round every corner and you didn’t get a mount until level 40. When I was in the 20s, I bumped in to another druid – named Balthuris. I had chosen to level “balance”, so wrath spammed my way through most things. He was playing a feral cat and was with another druid, called Tyrest. They invited me to join their guild and we completed the quest line around the Tower of…Azora? Something like that. We stuck together, the three of us, and I remember I used to pass on loot, because I healed them as we took on groups and I remember thinking – it wasn’t right for me to get a share of the loot or the silver or the gear when all I did was heal. They obviously insisted the opposite. I carried on, pottering up through the levels until I was about 50-something. I remember Balthuris raced ahead me and Tyrest and he ended up with this AMAZING spell called Hurricane that did damage to SEVERAL ENEMIES AT ONCE. That cleared out the Charred Vale in Stonetalon for me. Fuck that place was diabolical! There were harpies and elementals and treants and basilisks and EVERYTHING was in the aggro range of something else. I stopped playing for 3 months – I moved in to a flat in town and had no internet for three months. I genuinely have no idea how I survived. But survive I did. I watched a LOT of NCIS.

Getting back in to WoW was ace, and I dinged 58 or so sometime in the September. I remember Balthuris taking me through the Dark Portal and once in Shattrath my FPS shuddered down to about 2 or 3. I dinged 70 a few weeks later – I’d moved quicker then – and I had this surreal experience of healing for the first time. I’d been collecting “+ healing” gear throughout my levelling process, and I stuck it all on, mismatched leather and cloth and all sorts. I became a tree, and we went into what I *think* was Shadow Labyrinth normal. Me, a wonderful rogue friend called Baruch, Balthuris on his then feral tank, me, our hunter GL Xenathia and a warlock called Rosiah. Our guild was called Knights of the Crusade. You know, I don’t think it went all that badly either. I stayed in the guild until just before Wrath of the Lich King. Rosiah left us to join a “big guild” (there were only about 10 of us in Knights) called Justice League. They raided! I had no idea what raiding was, but somehow I ended up helping out healing in Karazhan, once. I remember grinding out a LOT of battlegrounds to get my favourite mace (which I still transmog in to today) as it was the best pre-raid weapon for healing druids. The whole experience was surreal. I remember the maiden of grief encounter, and curator. The whole thing was just utterly eye opening and I was bewildered and confused throughout.

I ended up getting kicked out of Knights when I had a blazing row with Bar, who had become a close friend. He was (is) a psychiatrist and he was an officer. The GL was only a 19 year old girl and she was “dating” one of the lads in the guild. Me and him got close as friends – nothing more – and she took offense. She gave me shit on a daily basis but only in whisper et al. I had no idea what to do about it so took issue with Bar – which was unfair. He told me if I had such a problem with it, I should find somewhere else to be, and booted me. A few players left with me, and the guild died. I applied to Justice League on Rosiah’s recommendation and was taken in, because I wanted to heal. Apparently they were in short supply.

Wrath of the Lich King came out and I was a couple of weeks late to the party. I was in a relationship with a chap called Mike at the time, and he didn’t like me playing WoW. In fact he didn’t *really* like me doing anything. He was exceptionally needy and I remember getting to the point where I had to write in my diary – “having *on my own* time tonight” – like I needed an excuse. Because if I wasn’t round at his, or we weren’t together, it’d be – why aren’t you here, what’s going on, etc etc. We didn’t last very long at I broke it off with him on NYE after I woke up and found him on my computer, going through my browser history, my received files and my MSN chat history. Which…well it wasn’t on really.

I dinged 80 a week later and somehow, the day after, rocking a 0/0/70 (or however many points it was) talent spec, entered Naxxramas in a 25 man raid. Oh. My. God. It was both the most exhilarating and amazing and frightening experience of my entire life. That first raid…I had no addons, no raid frames, no keybinds, no nothing. I started from scratch. The day after I just remember sitting at my desk and thinking – I really need to learn. So learn I did. Research became the name of the game, I was learning how to heal from people like Bells at 4 Healz and Phaelia. I learnt so much and just became this sponge for druid and healing information. And it showed. I went from not having a fucking CLUE to…actually being quite good. A couple of months into the year (2009) we had a guild meet up. Drank a LOT of alcohol, had a marvellously good time and partied our arses off. Eventually I stole Baruch away from whereever he’d gone with Xen and he joined Justice League too, and it was almost like all my friends were back together again. After raiding with Justice League for four months, I became the unofficial healing lead, sorting assignments and doing all the cooldown management and position management and god knows what else for our 25 man team. On our first kill of Kel’thuzad, the “Torch of Holy Fire” dropped. I was unanimously awarded it by the loot council despite pretty much -every- healer rolling on it. That right there was one of my happiest ever moments in WoW. I knew I was worth something – my hard work and my abilities and my EFFORT was paying off. A couple of days later there was an officer shakeup and they decided to appoint an official healing lead. It wasn’t me, it was a shaman who was married to one of the other officers. I was, to put it lightly, devastated. I didn’t know what to do though, so I carried on trying to do my job. I remember whispering him on one of the Sartharion attempts we were on with issues with one of the other healers and their low numbers. I was swiftly told that it was none of my business and that I should shut up.

That was it. I was gobsmacked. I remember being devastated. I sat on my computer chair utterly devastated. I felt like I’d given so much and just had it thrown back in my face. At this point in time I was in a relationship with a man called Stephen. I tried to talk to him about how upset I was. He told me I was being ridiculous, stupid, and that it was a computer game. I remember getting upset again, and that was the first time he hit me. It certainly wasn’t the last. I left Justice League, and name changed Elsen. She became Espreya (which was supposed to be a sort of bastardisation of “Freya” – flowers n greenery n all that shit). I wanted to forget everything that had happened and start afresh. I just surfed the tide of trade chat for a few days, briefly joining a social, pretty empty guild a RL friend of mine was in. And then one night, when I was stood alone in Dalaran, a call went out for a “For The Alliance” raid. I jumped at the chance – I was already a total achievement junkie and thought this was an ideal chance to do more. So I set off with them and joined them on Vent.

They were led by a lady, Meylenne, and seemed to have the most amazing amount of fun. I quickly logged on to their website and, because this is what I’m like, wrote a ridiculously long application form and was accepted straight away, before the raid had even finished. I joined Flames of the Phoenix as a non-raider, a social player, because that was all I was allowed to do. I was quite happy there, pottering around and doing what was needed of me when it was needed, helping out if I could. But unfortunately it didn’t last very long. In the May of 2009 I was told that Justice League, where I’d raided, had split in two. The “good” half of the officers had moved elsewhere, and formed a little guild called Respice Finem. They missed me and wanted me to come and heal for them. One night a week was all it was, just starting on Ulduar. I thought…if Stephen didn’t know, it’d be OK. I just had to remember not to talk about it and it’d be OK. I wouldn’t get in trouble then. I was enticed away by nice words basically – we need you to heal, you’re a good healer, we’re missing a druid, etc etc. I know now they just needed a warm body to fill a spot. So I, with a sad farewell – because I was very happy there – left Flames. I joined Respice Finem and started Ulduar.

The officer team in Respice Finem consisted of one man, his wife, her sister, HER husband, and their other close friend. Nepotism doesn’t even begin to cover it. I did what I always do though and threw myself into the job, trying to do the best that I could. At that time I started my own little blog, called “Sof and Tree”, and through there I started to chat to the other healer in our guild – this holy paladin called Zalduun.

Later (or tomorrow) – Part 2, Respice Finem onwards.

Raiding 101: Listening to Your Raid Leader

Everyone loves a good opinion. We all have them. We all think we know the best, have the right method and the best understanding. But there are certain times in both life and in game where FUCK thinking you know the best. There is someone in charge, someone higher up, someone employed to be or voted to be or plain and simply PUT in charge. One of these times is raiding.

Please note all statements inside this blog post are opinions, mine.

When it’s OK to talk

Everyone raids in a different environment, and I think having raided in seven guilds over the past four years I have a decent breadth of experience to pull from. I have raided in a huge variety of situations, from 10 man casual to 25 man hardcore and everything in between. However regardless of this I think that there are certain times you shouldn’t be speaking. These are:

- during a fight

- when the raid leader is giving out important information – pull timers, strategy instructions, information.

When I was in Praetorian Guards on Terenas and Adept on Draenor, I raided 4-5 nights a week. I got “trained” into not moving off my chair unless it was during an allocated break, of not listening to music or the TV (I’m easily distracted so would lose my concentration with the TV on) of not typing in /g during raids, of watching videos and reading strats beforehand, of…well of all these things. There was also a very strict hierarchy when it came to speech.

I currently raid in a casual group, we’re 5/8 at the moment and hitting a bit of a brick wall on Blackhorn. This is very different for me. Sometimes I struggle with it. I’ve worked out why:

- I don’t understand why drinks/snacks/the toilet is not done before the raid start and during the break. With unannounced AFKs or non-designated AFKs, it seems like up to 30 minutes of time just disappears. I’m reminding myself of Tib, our crazy RL from PG, who used to time non-designated AFKs and then absolutely rollock us for it.

- I don’t understand why some people don’t use raid frames. I mean really. NO raid frames? Like, at all? How do you see who’s in range? Or who’s dead? Or if someone is mass ressing? Or if someone has a debuff that’s going to cause them to explode in your face? I don’t…I don’t get it. I thought raid frames were an utter necessity!

- lag as an excuse. You know how many times I’ve heard “lag!” as an excuse. You know what? It’s not a fucking excuse. If people have SO MANY issues with lag then they need to either stop raiding until they have fixed their issues (be they internet based or computer based) or to learn (like the resto druid I used to raid with who played with 1000ms at all times and was AMAZING whilst doing so) to work round it. I do understand occasionally that there are issues with a DC, a computer crash or whathaveyou. However when it’s the same people all the time it stops being a reasonable excuse. And also – it’s used as a scapegoat far too often. If I balls up, I’ll admit it. I’ll say – I’m sorry, I’ve just been shit. I won’t try and blame it on something else.

But you know what the biggie is? I don’t understand why people talk over the raid leader. The raid leader is there for a reason. They are there to lead the raids.

Normal raid members are NOT there to:

- make comments about strategies during the explanation – such as “well why don’t we do it this way?” “shouldn’t char X be doing that not char Y?” and others

- make comments DURING boss fights about what other people should be doing – “use this spell!” “use that spell!” “you should be doing THAT now!”

- make comments DURING boss fights about the strategy! – “shouldn’t we do this instead?” “well that didn’t work let’s do this”, “char X is in the wrong place, they should be here!”

- consistently calls out the SAME markers/timers that the raid leader calls out. When I raided in Adept, on fights like Halfus heroic I would call out things such as my Tranquility cooldowns etc, and in all guilds as well as having a target macro I also call out Rebirth. However the markers such as….moving out from molten seeds in Ragnaros, clicking the timer in Ultraxion, calling out twilight onslaught in Blackhorn. These should be called by the raid leader and ONLY the raid leader.

Admonishments also – if I do something wrong (I managed to pull trash in Firelands last night by accident and dragged it to the group, causing us all to wipe. I felt mightily bad about it) then the only person who should be telling me I’ve done wrong is the raid leader. It’s not a mouthy DPS who thinks they know what’s best and think they have every right to call me whatever “jovial” term they choose in order to make a comment about my arse pull.

I can understand hearing from the tanks – tank swaps and callouts, cooldowns and shouts. I can understand hearing from healers – healing cooldowns and callouts, rebirths or ankhs, etc. And I suppose, in a 25 man guild, I could probably understand a second raid member of a different position (ie, one ranged/one melee) calling out particular issues.

But the rest of us? The rest of us are there to BE quiet, to DO our job and to SHUT UP.

I really like raiding where I do now because we have a lot of laughs, chat and giggles. And most of this happens when we aren’t in the middle of a fight, although on easy fights that are defined as “farm”, often we will carry on having a laugh and chatting.

But that’s different to someone directly overtalking to raid leader on matters of the raid. There’s a difference between going, “lol, that’s what she said” when someone accidentally makes a sex joke (happens a lot…) and calling out a timer over the top of the raid leader. Or is that just me??

I’ve rambled for a while now but it also comes down to something else, in my eyes. Respect.

I have immense respect for almost every raid leader I’ve worked with, and immense respect for my current raid leader. He handles a bunch of casuals who DO lose focus, stop concentrating and get distracted, very well. We get praise when we improve and there can be stern words when we need to be serious. He does all this whilst keeping morale high and making the whole experience enjoyable for us.

I do therefore find it super frustrating when people don’t offer up the respect that is deserved. Arguing over a strategy in the middle of a pull – or tbh arguing over a strategy during a raid AT ALL – is, in my eyes, inappropriate behaviour. You want to debate a strategy? Do it in the forums afterwards.

It isn’t always the case but some times the reason we wipe is because people are doing their own thing and NOT listening to the raid leader. Because they think they know best. I can tell you right now, they don’t.

Your raid leader is there for a reason.

He does his job, we do ours.

Mounts in WoW Part 6 – Class Mounts, World Drops/Grinds, TCG, Arena & the Unknowns!!

- checked 3rd April 2012, removed three from the unknowns – heart of the aspects and the two spectral mounts.

Class Specifics

Argent Charger - This mount costs 100 Champion’s Seals from Dame Evniki Kapsalis in the Argent Tournament. To buy it you must be a “Crusader” – exalted and a champion with your five home cities PLUS the Argent Crusade and the Silver Covenant/Sunreaver’s and most important…be a paladin – it’s paladin only. Colour wise the horse itself is a grey, with Silver skirted and plated horse armor and gold edged silver shields. The armor also sports a variety of spikes down the horse’s nose and smaller ones down his neck.

Charger (Blood Elf) / Charger (Human, Dwarf, Undead) - these two chargers (the blood elf one with red skirted armour, the others with a blue armour) are the epic paladin mounts.

Dreadsteed – this is the epic version (deep red with fiery hooves and mane) of the Warlock class mount. It also has armour down its neck.

Exarch’s Elekk – this is the new Draenei paladin mount, the basic version. It’s relatively dull in colour.

Felsteed – this is the slow version of the Warlock mount. It has no armour but deep brown fur with fiery eyes, mouth and hooves.

Great Exarch’s Elekk – this is the second new Draenei paladin mount, the epic version. It’s actually pretty stunning, huge with grey skin, purple cloth armour and heavy silver and gold plated armour.

Great Sunwalker Kodo – this is one of the two new Tauren kodo paladin mounts, this is the epic speed version. It is grey skinned with multicoloured, lovely bright armour.

Sunwalker Kodo – this is the basic version of the Tauren paladin mount, which is like an unpolished, dull version of the epic mount.

Warhorse (Blood Elf) / Warhorse (Human, Dwarf, Undead) – these two chargers (the blood elf one with red skirted armour, the others with a blue armour) are the basic speed paladin mounts.

Winged Steed of the Ebon Blade – this flying skeletal mount is restricted only to death knights. It costs 1,000g. It has skeletal wings and a blue cloth armour.

World Drops & Grinds

Grey Riding Camel - this camel is the third of a set and the only one that is challenging to get. This camel is a 100% drop rate from a NPC called Dormus the Camel-Hoarder. To reach Dormus you have to click on small camel figurines which are scattered around Uldum. Most of them crumble on use, but very occasionally they will port you to a secret part of Uldum. Kill Dormus and he will drop your camel mount. The mount is a dark grey with a paler grey underbelly and grey beard.

Phosphorescent Stone Drake – this drake, that shares the model with the drakes in Deepholm, drops from the rare mob Aeonaxx. It is green with purple crystals and flecks. Although the drake drops from Aeonaxx every single time, Aeonaxx itself has a low spawn time and a long pat. You need to spend a fair amount of time camping it in order to net a kill.

Subdued Seahorse / Reins of Poseidus - this very rare mount drops from the very rare mob Poseidus in Vash’jir. The difference between this seahorse and the other is that this is usable outside Vash’jir, in any water. There is a lot of information on WoWhead about Poseidus and his spawn time, rate and spawn points. On servers it can go on the Auction House – as it is BoE – for anything between 30,000 and 100,000 gold.

Time-Lost Proto-Drake – this drake, 100% drop rate from the TLPD itself, was one of the rarest mounts in game. It continues to be so due to the huge number of hours and routes you’d have to camp out the drake to get it to drop. Visually the mob is golden yellow with brown edging.

TCG

Amani Dragonhawk - a very attractive dragonhawk that came from the Twilight of the Dragons expansion pack that was released in July 2011. It is identical in skin to the dragonhawks in Zul’Aman, and was the rare drop from the expansion pack and can pull between £130 and £180 on eBay.

Big Battle Bear - this mount is from the TCG Expansion Pack “Drums of War” and was added in Patch 3.2. It is unusual in model in that he has full black fur, almost blue, with basic brown leather straps round his neck and hind legs, and what looks like a woven saddle on his back, which is framed by what looks like the massive bottom jaw of some creature or other! The card for the mount is called The Red Bearon, and was a 1/363 drop rate. It currently sells for about £70-£90.

Blazing Hippogryph – this is another TCG expansion pack mounts, from the expansion Wrathgate. Visually the hippogryph is quite “dark”, with maroon feathers, yellow wing bases and small lilac edges. Its eyes are golden yellow. It costs between £220 and £250 on eBay.

Corrupted Hippogryph – this is another TCG expansion pack mount from the new expansion Crown of Heaven which is released in March 2012. Its colouring links to its name as the bird is a mixture of very dark green and murky olive greens with radioactive green eyes.

Magic Rooster / Magic Rooster Egg - this mount is one of my favourite in game. It is a basic, unarmoured, giant brown chicken. It’s utterly fabulous and perfect in design and also the amazing expression on its face. Truly majestic in every way. This was in the Fields of Honor expansion pack and was a very low drop chance – 1/363. You can get it from eBay for in between $200 and $300.

Mottled Drake – this rather unattractive drake is a dirty brown in colour with green freckles and spots. It comes from the Worldbreaker expansion at the 1/242 drop rate.

Riding Turtle - this TCG mount comes from the Heroes of Azeroth expansion pack and can go for £100 ish on eBay. Amusingly this mount moves slowly on land – the same as normal person movement speed without a mount, however in water it boosts up to the 100% speed mounts. It has a green body and brown shell and a lovely little happy smile on its face.

Savage Raptor - this mount came from the War of the Elements expansion pack released in April 2011. It was a 1/363 drop mount and is usable by Alliance and Horde, making it a raptor mount usable by the Alliance. Skin wise – it is an orange colour with paler orange underbelly, and model wise it is identical to the other raptors.

Swift Shorestrider - this strider, a third added to the game, is a turqoise-y green colour with an orange neck and underbelly. It drops as a 1/363 card in the Throne of the Tides expansion pack which was released October 11th 2011. You can pay roughly between £80 and £130 for this on eBay.

Swift Spectral Tiger / Spectral Tiger - this mount is one of the very rarest in game. At a 1/484 chance from the Fires of Outland Booster pack, it can sell for over £1000 on eBay. So get your wallets out if you want it! Visually, this mount looks like an armoured saber except translucent with a slight purple/blue tinge. The armour is silver with crystals rather than gems with white/blue glowing eyes. There is both an epic and non epic (previously related to speed although now all mounts scale to your highest speed) form of this cat and they are identical visually.

White Riding Camel - this mount will be available from May 2012 as part of the Tomb of the Forgotten TCG expansion pack. It’s rarity is currently unknown however it is likely that it will be the normal 1/363 rarity for TCG mounts.

Wooly White Rhino - this is the only rideable rhino in game. It was a 1/242 (speculated) drop chance mount from the Icecrown TCG expansion pack and is unarmoured, and identical in skin to the rhinos roaming around Northrend. It can go for between £200 and £250 on eBay.

X-51 Nether-Rocket X-TREME – this rocket, a 1/363 drop from the Servants of the Betrayer expansion pack, is a red and silver rocket for one passenger. It’s now BoE so can be sold on the Auction House. It also comes with a non-epic blue version, which is blue and purple colouring in opposition to the red – called the X-51 Nether-Rocket.

Arena Rewards

Brutal Nether Drake – this nether drake is similar to the blue/onyx drake in colour but with full armour across the face and along the tail. The brutal nether drake was a reward for coming in the top percentage of Arena players in Season Four.

Deadly Gladiator’s Frost Wyrm – this frost wyrm was the reward for gladiators in Arena Season Five.

Furious Gladiator’s Frost Wyrm – this frost wyrm was the reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Six.

Merciless Nether Drake – this nether drake was the reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Two.

Relentless Gladiator’s Frost Wyrm – this frost wyrm was the reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Seven.

Ruthless Gladiator’s Twilight Drake – this STUNNING twilight drake was the reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Ten.

Swift Nether Drake – this drake was the reward for gladiators in Arena Season One. There was originally a bug with this mount where in the EU the top 5% (not 0.5%) got the mount by accident.

Vengeful Nether Drake – this nether drake was the reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Three.

Vicious Gladiator’s Twilight Drake – this super stunning drake was a reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Nine.

Wrathful Gladiator’s Frost Wyrm – this frost wyrm was the reward for the gladiators in Arena Season Eight.

Unknown / Not Implemented

Green Fire Hawk - this mount was tweeted as new in Patch 4.2 but it wasn’t actually implemented.

Mounts in WoW Part 5 – World Events, BoP Professions & BoE Professions

- checked 3rd April 2012, no changes.

World Events

The Argent Tournament

Argent Warhorse - This mount, sold for 100 Champion’s Seals from the Argent Tournament, is available to both the Alliance and the Horde, being the only (except for paladin chargers) LIVE horse the horde can acquire. You must again be a Crusader, exalted and a champion of all five cities, as well as exalted with the Argent Crusade and the Silver Covenant (Sunreaver’s for Horde) to purchase the horse. Similar to the Argent Charger, the horse itself is a grey, with burnished metal/silvery grey skirted horse armor, with the Crusade emblem on each skirt flap around the horse’s legs. There are no shields or spikes on this armor.

Argent Hippogryph - a hippogryph open to both the alliance and the horde. It costs 150 Champions Seals. It is white with brown feathers, talons, beak and wing tips. The body is flecked with black spots.

Brewfest

Brewfest Ram - the previous incarnation of the Brewfest ram, this mount is a plain brown furred ram with brown horns. The model is now shared with the rams you ride in the dailies. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

Great Brewfest Kodo - this mount is one of two that have a chance of dropping for you once per day if you defeat Coren Direbrew, the Brewfest daily boss. It has a 4% drop rate which makes it one of the more common drops – much more common than the headless horseman! The unique thing about this Kodo is that it is rideable by Alliance as well as Horde, making it the only cross faction kodo. Visually it’s the same as the other armoured kodos, with a dark black/grey skin and red/orange/gold horned armour.

Swift Brewfest Ram - a ram that previously was buyable from vendors is now a drop chance mount from Coren Direbrew, identical to the Kodo. It also has a 4% drop rate. The unique thing about this Ram is that it is rideable by Horde as well as Alliance, making it the only cross faction ram. Visually it is brown with dark brown horns and chocolate brown armour, studded with green gems.

Darkmoon Faire

Darkmoon Dancing Bear - the dancing bear costs 180 darkmoon faire tickets. He is a basic brown bear with an armoured saddle etc with the Darkmoon Colours, as well as a Darkmoon Faire emblem hovering above its head. Doing the command /mountspecial (or pressing space bar) will cause the bear to rear up on his hind legs, identical to the way a druid bear dances.

Swift Forest Strider - this awesome mount costs 180 darkmoon faire tickets. It’s the only strider mount in game and is in the Darkmoon colours, with a mostly bright purple body with bright green neck and belly. It’s been reskinned on top of the hawkstrider model which means when it runs its neck goes REALLY far forward. It’s an awesome mount with excellent animations and excellent colouring. Well worth the buy.

Hallow’s End

Headless Horseman’s Mount – this amazing flying horse is identical to the mount ridden by the Headless Horseman himself during the event. There is a 0.5% chance it will drop from the Loot-Filled Pumpkin you can collect from the boss each day.

Love is in the Air

Big Love Rocket - this incredibly innuendo filled “love rocket” is a very rare (0.16%) drop from the Love is in the Air holiday boss. It is similar in model to the other rocket mounts and is neon, bright pink. It has a zebra print seat.

Swift Lovebird - the second tallstrider added to the game – although not available yet (as of 25th January 2012) – this mount is a tall pink tallstrider probably identical in skin to the Mulgore Hatchling pet from the Argent Tournament. You will need 270 tokens to purchase it.

Noblegarden

Swift Springstrider - a fourth tallstrider added to the game, with a grey/green colouring all over. This one will be available from vendors during Noblegarden and will cost 500 chocolates.

The Opening of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj

Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal / Battle Tank - Now completely unobtainable in game (as the gates to Ahn’Qiraj are automatically open on any new realm, not that new realms are ever launched anyway), the Black Qiraji Battle Tank was a reward from “banging the gong” and opening the gates after the War Effort and incredibly long quest line that preceeded the opening of the gates. Only one person on any server would in theory ever hold the mount and title that came with it (Scarab Lord). It’s the only epic mount in game. THIS MOUNT IS NOT OBTAINABLE.

Professions – BoP (can only be used by the person with the profession)

Archaeology

Fossilized Raptor - one of the most common “epics” in Archaeology, the Fossilized raptor comes from Fossil (funny, that) dig sites, which unfortunately do not accept Keystones, making your grind a little longer. It does only require 100 fragments though, and with each dig site dropping 5+ fragments now, it’s speedy. The raptor is the same in model and animations as the other raptors, however purely skeletal, made of old, grubby bone. What with being a fossil, it has no armour, just a small saddle and set of reins.

Ultramarine Qiraji Battle Tank - this is one of the most rare archaeology finds and mounts in game. It is a Tol’vir find, which is rare enough in itself, and then it is a very rare find within the Tol’vir anyway. In model it is identical to the other qiraji battle tanks, but is very interesting in colour as it is an – as is stated in the name – bright ultramarine blue. Unlike the other battle tanks, it can be used anywhere in the world and is not restricted to Ahn’Qiraj.

Engineering

Flying Machine – this chopper is BoE but only usable by engineers. Engineers need to be 300 to make it and it requires 2 Fel Iron Casing, 20 Elemental Blasting Powder, 20 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts and 8 star wood.

Turbo-Charged Flying Machine – this chopper is BoE but only usable by engineers, similar to the flying carpets of the Tailors. Engineers need to be of level 375 to make it and it requires, 4 Adamantite Frames, 8 Khorium Power Core, 8 Felsteel Stabilizers and…a Hula Girl Doll.

Fishing

Sea Turtle - this mount is identical in model to the Riding Turtle mount but with blue skin and a green shell. One of the best things about this mount is that the /mountspecial command is to jump into the air and suck all legs and head into its shell, then pop out again. Fishing up this turtle nets you an achievement, and it can be fished from pools across Northrend and Cataclysm zones.

Tailoring

Flying Carpet – this carpet that requires a tailoring level of 300. Colour wise it is green with yellow trimmings and patterns. To make it you need 6 bolts of Netherweave, 5 Heavy Silken Thread, 4 Arcane Dust and 4 Golden Draenite.

Frosty Flying Carpet – one of the options for tailors, this mount requires 4 frozen orbs, a moonshroud, an ebonweave and a spellweave. It can be crafted by those that have 425 tailoring and although it is BoE, it can only be USED by tailors, which is why I have put it in this section. Visually it is blue with darker blue patterns and edging.

Magnificent Flying Carpet – this tailor-only (BoE but only usable by tailors) flying carpet requires 12 bolts of imbued frostweave, 4 monarch topaz, 4 red dye, 2 yellow dye and 4 iceweb spider silk. It can be crafted by tailors of level 425 and above.

Professions – BoE (can be bought by anyone)

Alchemy

Sandstone Drake / Vial of the Sands – this drake is a mount you transform in to that allows you to carry people as well. Visually it is a dark bluey/green with yellow crystals. To get this mount you can either buy it off the AH – for between 35k and 40k – or have it crafted for you. Alchemists must first discover the recipe – a rare drop from the rare archaeology find “Canopic Jar” – and then craft it using a complex mix of materials.

Engineering

Mechano-Hog / Mekgineer’s Chopper - This mount – usually between 10 and 15k gold on the AH, roughly 10 – 11k gold with mats alone – was introduced in Wrath of the Lich King and is BoE – so you can find it on the Auction House. The engineer needs to be exalted with their Northrend-home faction to buy the pattern, but the person who wants to own the mount does not need to. The hog and chopper are similar in visuals. To craft it you need 12 Titansteel bars, 40 handfuls of cobalt bolts, 2 arctic fur, 1 salvaged iron golem parts (450 engineering to buy), 8 goblin-machined piston (450 engineering to buy) and one elementium-plated exhaust pipe (450 engineering to buy). The engineer needs to be of level 450 to craft it. It was one of the first ever 2 person mounts in game and can carry a passenger.

Mounts in WoW Part 4 – 5 Mans, Instances, Raid Drops/Grinds

- checked 3rd April 2012, no changes.

5 Man Instances – drops / grinds

Amani Battle Bear - this is one of two bears that shame an identical model with slight recolouring. This version – achievable in the “new” Zul’Aman, a heroic instance that you can run at level 85 – drops from the final animal boss IF you defeat all 4 animal gods within the time limit. Only one drops, which means you have at a minimum a 1 in 5 chance of getting the mount. At this stage, it is quite likely a lot of people (on their mains, anyway) will have the mount so your chances will be better. The bear is a very dark brown/black colour, with purpley-red armor. His face is covered in a mask, with shrivelled troll heads hanging down from the sides of his neck. A large tusk flanks the saddle on each side, and it has a large pommel horn. His hind legs have flaming voodoo masks on them. His mouth is in a permanent snarl.

Amani War Bear - this is the second of the two Amani bears, and is no longer obtainable in game. It was achievable through completing the timed run in ZA which was a much more difficult task at this time, taking 10 (as ZA was a 10 man raid) well geared people to complete. The bear is a very dark brown/black colour, with deep, bright red armor. His face is covered in a mask, with shrivelled troll heads hanging down from the sides of his neck. A large tusk flanks the saddle on each side, and it has a large pommel horn. His hind legs have flaming voodoo masks on them. His mouth is in a permanent snarl.

Armored Razzashi Raptor - this mount has a 1% drop chance from Bloodlord Mandokir in Zul’Gurub. The mount was added in Patch 4.1 and is identical in model to the other raptors in game, however different in skin. The colour of his body is a deep red with purpley/orangey stripes along the underside of his tail and an orange belly, and with green armor. The armor covers the spike on his nose and plated armor that covers the outside of his hind legs and the upper half of his tail.

Blue Proto-Drake – this blue proto-drake, bright blue in colour with paler blue edging, is available from Skadi the Ruthless in Utgarde Pinnacle. It has a 1.7% drop rate making it quite low, but certainly farmable, especially as 85 as some of the bosses can be skipped.

Bronze Drake – this drake is a 100% chance drop from the extra mob you can kill if you complete the first half of the Culling of Stratholme on heroic mode. The drake is one of the most common around as it is easy to reach, kill and farm. One drops per instance run.

Deathcharger’s Reins - this cross-faction mount is available from Stratholme – previously Baron Rivendare and now his relative, Lord Aurius Rivendare. It has a roughly 0.1 – 1.0% drop chance. The mount itself is seen as particularly rare because of it’s *almost* unique model – unique for Alliance in that it is the only skeletal horse, less unique for Horde however its feet do have purple fel fire around them, unlike the normal horses etc. The horse is skeletal with large horns and a blue skirt armour. Although in theory this is an “easy” mount to farm, as all level 85s will well outclass the the instance and can essentially walk through, and you only need to kill 4 of the many bosses to access the Baron, the incredibly low drop rate has caused many a player to go insane.

Raven Lord - this mount drops from the bird boss Anzu in Sethekk Halls in Auchindoun. It has a 1.8% drop rate. From TBC until recently, the boss could only be summoned using a key that was granted to druids during the Swift Flight Form quest line, but it is now available to anybody who runs the instance on heroic mode. Model wise, the mount is a bird, with royal blue, golden yellow and black feathers and golden wingtips. He is a ground mount, despite being a bird.

Swift Razzashi Raptor - this mount used to drop from Bloodlord Mandokir in Zul’Gurub before patch 4.0 and Cataclysm. It had a very low drop rate when it was available, and was rideable by Alliance and horde, making it rare for the alliance. In colour it is a bright green with dark red armour and neon green head feathers. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

Swift White Hawkstrider - this mount, the only hawkstrider usable by the Alliance, is a 4% drop from Kael’thas Sunstrider in Magister’s Terrace. It has basic gold armour with green gems and white feathers with a purple tint.

Swift Zulian Panther - this mount replaced the Swift Zulian Tiger that was from the original ZG. It isn’t a great mount to be honest, it is just a simply panther skin with no additions. It can be ridden by the Horde and the Alliance, and has a roughly 1% drop rate.

Swift Zulian Tiger - this mount used to drop from the High Priestess in the old, raid version of ZG. It is my very most favourite mount in game and I think it’s a gorgeous skin, proper tiger skin. The armour is a burnished silver with yellow gems. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

Vitreous Stone Drake – this stone drake, coloured grey with blue crystals and bright green wing flaps, drops with a 0.8% chance from Slabhide in the Stonecore.

Raids – drop / grinds

Ashes of A’lar - this incredibly rare phoenix mount drops from Kael’thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep, The Eye. It is a 1.7% drop rate and is stunningly attractive, with a neon, glowing orange body with pink wing tips. It leaves pink streaks throughout the air behind it.

Azure Drake – this mount is a rare drop from Malygos on either 10 or 25 man. It went through a few changes in Wrath of the Lich King to encourage people to complete the Oculus instance, but now, as of 26th January 2012, drops from both the 10 and 25 man instance. It has a 3% drop rate.

Black Drake – this mount is a guaranteed drop rate from Sartharion when you kill him with all three drakes alive on 10 man mode. It is a deep dark brown colour with an orangey red set of talons, undersides of wings, underbelly and tail spikes.

Blazing Drake – this mount is a rare drop from the Deathwing fights on either normal or heroic, 10 or 25 man. It is another reskin of Alexstraza, but an orange colour rather than a red. The drop rate is currently looking at about 1.3%.

Blue Qiraji Battle Tank - this battle tank is similar in colour to the ultramarine battle tank with glowing green eyes. It drops from several of the trash mobs in AQ40 with between an 8% and 12% drop rate. The issue with these mounts is that they are only usable within AQ and you cannot use them externally. They are also incredibly cowardly and will sink in to the ground, dismounting you, if you enter combat.

Experiment 12-B – this gorgeous drake mount drops from Ultraxion on 10, 25, normal and heroic. It has a very low drop rate though – just 0.2%. It’s design is that of a classic drake, with a purple/red skin, yellow undersides of their wings, turquoise wing tips, talons and edging along its neck.

Fiery Warhorse - oh this mount. This bastard mount. This mount drops from Attumen the Huntsmen, the first boss in the level 70 10 man raid instance of Karazhan. He is easy to solo at level 85, but unfortunately the drop rate is abysmal AND, what with it being a raid, it has a week long reset. WoWhead states that it’s 0.9%, which means even if drop rates did work that you would get the mount after 100 runs, it’d take you two years. So yea, it’s a bastard. It is, however, gorgeous. A horse that flies by galloping through the air, it has fiery green hooves and feet, with shiny bronze armour and the tattered remainders of red skirted armour. The horse itself has green glowing fel eyes and black hair.

Flametalon of Alysrazor - this mount has a 2% chance of dropping from the bird boss Alysrazor in Firelands. It is a reskin of the incredibly popular druid mount, Anzu. Matching the Firelands style, the Flametalon looks to be purely made of fire, with bright, bright orange feathers, that turn yellow as they reach the middle. He also has yellow eyes and a beak & talons of dark brown covered in cracks of fire. He wears some armour – over his beak, along his wing tips and the bone of his wing. The only other armour is a saddle.

Grand Black War Mammoth (Alliance) / Grand Black War Mammoth (Horde) – this mount, a recolour of the normal mammoth skin, is black with reins and armour embossing matching the colour of the user’s faction – blue for Alliance and red for Horde. The fur of the Mammoth is also a black rather than the usual brown. This mount can drop from any of the four bosses in the Vault of Archavon, the level 80 wintergrasp bosses, with a drop rate of between 0.9% and 1.2%.

Green Battle Tank - this battle tank is green with orange points on its exoskeleton and purple glowing eyes. It drops from several of the trash mobs in AQ40 with between an 8% and 12% drop rate. The issue with these mounts is that they are only usable within AQ and you cannot use them externally. They are also incredibly cowardly and will sink in to the ground, dismounting you, if you enter combat.

Ice Mammoth (Alliance) / Ice Mammoth (Horde) – this mount is also available from the Sons of Hodir quartermaster once you are revered with the faction. It is a normal, none-passenger mount and costs just 1,000 gold. It is a pale grey with white bits recolour, and as with other mammoths has reins/armour matching the owner’s faction (blue for Alliance, red for Horde)

Invincible – this is a truly genuine special mount. Lore wise, Invincible is Arthas’ original mount. As a young boy he jumped the colt when it was not ready and it slipped in the snow and broke his legs, resulting in death. Arthas, once he became the Lich King, returned to Invincible’s grave and reanimated the horse. Whilst in Wrath of the Lich King, this mount dropped every time Heroic LK was killed on a 25 man setting, this changed with Cataclysm and it is now an incredibly low drop rate similar to Mimiron’s Head.

Life-Binder’s Handmaiden – this gorgeous mount – a reskin of Alexstraza, Aspect of Life, in her dragon form, is a 100% drop from the Heroic kill of the Madness of Deathwing.

Mimiron’s Head – this mount used to be a guaranteed drop from Yogg+0, however the drop rate was significantly nerfed and is now an incredibly low drop rate. This mount is completely unique in skin and model and is literally a copy of Mimiron – the keeper’s – head. It flies using a propeller.

Onyxian Drake – this mount is an incredibly rare drop – 0.2% – from Onyxia on either 10 or 25. The mount is special not only because of the rarity but it is a reskin OF Onyxia – which is extra awesome.

Pureblood Fire Hawk – this mount is a pure yellow version of the fire hawks that are around the Molten Front. It has a 1.3% drop from Ragnaros on any difficulty or raid size. It can both fly or run along the ground and is a reskin of the meta achievement mount.

Red Battle Tank - this battle tank is a deep red with beige armour points. It drops from several of the trash mobs in AQ40 but with a much lower drop rate – 1 – 1.5%. Getting this mount rewards you with a feat of Strength. The issue with these mounts is that they are only usable within AQ and you cannot use them externally. They are also incredibly cowardly and will sink in to the ground, dismounting you, if you enter combat.

Swift Alliance Steed - this mount was a reward for completing Trial of the Grand Crusader on 10 man with 50 tries left – ie, no raid wipes. It was a guaranteed drop but removed in Patch 4.0. It was a stunningly attractive mount, white in skin with a black mane and tail, with gold and bright, vibrant blue intricate armour along his head, front of his legs and across his chest.

Swift Horde Wolf - this mount was a reward for completing Trial of the Grand Crusader on 10 man with 50 tries left – ie, no raid wipes. It was a guaranteed drop but removed in Patch 4.0. It just looks like a lot of the other wolves, with silver  armour and leg plates.

Twilight Drake – this drake, a mixture of dark and vibrant blues, is a 100% drop from the 25 man version of Sarthation 3D.

Yellow Battle Tank - this battle tank is bright deep yellow with black points on its exoskeleton and blue glowing eyes. It drops from several of the trash mobs in AQ40 with between an 8% and 12% drop rate. The issue with these mounts is that they are only usable within AQ and you cannot use them externally. They are also incredibly cowardly and will sink in to the ground, dismounting you, if you enter combat.

Mounts in WoW Part 3 – Achievement Rewards, Guild Achievements, Quest Rewards, Blizzcon/Blizzard Store, SoR & RaF

- checked 3rd April 2012, added information about Heart of the Aspects, Spectral Gryphon & Spectral Windrider.

Achievement Rewards

Albino Drake – this drake, a creamy white with turquoise edging along the wings and claws. It is the reward for collecting 50 mounts.

Black War Bear (Alliance) / Black War Bear (Horde) – these mounts are the reward for completing the “For the Alliance / For the Horde” achievements – killing each of the opposing faction’s leaders. This has become noticeably harder in Cataclysm and the leaders now need a lot more concentration and coordination to complete. Visibly the fur is a dark, deep brown colour, and as with other bears, the Alliance armour is blue, the Horde armour is a rusty brown.

Black Proto-Drake – this gorgeous proto-drake was implemented as a reward for those that completed Glory of the Raider in Tier 7. Unfortunately, and without warning, Blizzard removed these drakes without warning when Ulduar was patched in. This certainly caused uproar in the community and as of the 26th January 2012, they haven’t done this with any of the other meta achievement raid drakes. Visually it is a dark brown with paler brown edging/wing tips etc. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher – this frost wyrm, with red tips and drips over it, is a reward for completing the 10 man version of the Glory of the Icecrown Raider.

Blue Dragonhawk – this is the Alliance only reward for completing the 100 mounts achievement. It is the only non-TCG dragonhawk that is available to the Alliance. Visually it is a stunning mix of purples, blues and greens.

Blue Drake – similar to the Azure Drake, this mount can drop from Malygos on either 10 or 25 man. It is a bright, turquoise-y blue with white wing tips and talons. It used to, during Wrath of the Lich King, drop from a special bag that was offered to people who completed the instance using the dungeon finder. Now it ONLY drops from Malygos.

Corrupted Egg of Millagazor / Corrupted Fire Hawk – this gorgeous fire hawk – a reskin of the fire hawks/protodrakes – is a reward once you have completed the Glory of the Firelands Raider meta achievement. It is a bright, neon purple in colour and moves on both land and in the air.  It has intricate purple armour with dark metal edging.

Crusader’s Black Warhorse (Horde) / Crusader’s White Warhorse (Alliance) - This mount, a black/white armoured horse very similar in model to those of the Argent Horses, used to be a reward for completing Trial of the Grand Crusader on 25 man without a single wipe AND without a single person dying in any attempt…so pretty hardcore stuff!!! It’s a lovely mount but essentially almost identical to the other skirted horses. The alliance version of this is that it’s skirts are very bright white with the Argent Crusade emblem on the skirt flaps and white armour throughout. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

Drake of the East Wind – this drake, a model shared by 4 drakes introduced in Cataclysm, is a reward for the individuals who complete Glory of the Cataclysm Raider. Visually it is a pinky red colour with green wing flaps and lightning coursing across its body.

Drake of the North Wind – this drake, a model shared by 4 drakes introduced in Cataclysm, is a rare drop from the boss Altairus in Vortex Pinnacle. It has a 0.8% drop rate. Visually it is a grey colour and also has lightning coursing across its body.

Drake of the South Wind – this drake, a model shared by 4 drakes introduced in Cataclysm, is a rare drop from Al’Akir in the Throne of the Four Winds raid. It has a 0.7% drop rate. Visually it is a dark purple/blue with lightning covering its body.

Flameward Hippogryph – this mount is a reward for completing the “unlock the areas” achievement for the quest hub within the Molten Front in Mount Hyjal. The bird is a normal hippogryph in model but with an interesting skin of oranges, reds, purples and yellows with glowing blue eyes. The base of its wings are flaming and fiery as is its tail. When it is flying, sparks of fire fall through the air and off its wings.

Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher - this frost wyrm, which glows with an eternal icy blue light, is a reward for completing the 25 man version of the Glory of the Icecrown Raider.

Ironbound Proto-Drake – one of my favourite proto drakes in game, this is a reward for completing Glory of the Ulduar raider on 25 man. Visually it is black wtih icy blue edging and shiny bits.

Plagued Proto-Drake - this gorgeous proto-drake was implemented as a reward for those that completed Glory of the Raider in Tier 7. Unfortunately, and without warning, Blizzard removed these drakes without warning when Ulduar was patched in. This certainly caused uproar in the community and as of the 26th January 2012, they haven’t done this with any of the other meta achievement raid drakes. Visually it is shares the model with the plagued drakes in Icecrown. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

Red Proto-Drake – this proto drake is the reward for completing the Glory of the Hero 5 man achievement for the Wrath of the Lich King heroics.

Red Dragonhawk - this is the Alliance only reward for completing the 100 mounts achievement. It is the only non-TCG dragonhawk that is available to the Alliance. Visually it is a stunning mix of orange, yellow and red.

Rusted Proto-Drake – another proto-drake for completing a Glory meta – this time the 10 man meta achievement. Visually it does what it says on the tin – it’s rusty brown with runes.

Twilight Harbinger – this is another reskin of Alexstraza, but with a purple colour. It is a reward for completing the Glory of the Dragon Soul raider.

Vicious War Steed - this is an unusual mount as it is a reward for three achievements – and becomes BoA so can be sent, once you receive it the 2nd and 3rd time, to other characters that you have. It is the reward for winning 75, then 200, then 300 rated battlegrounds. Skin wise the horse is black furred, with heavy heavy armour. You cannot see the mane but the horse has a pale brown tail that has been bound in to sections. The armour is blue metal with silver edging and red cloth extras, and there is an orc skull hanging from the back of the saddle. The foreleg armour has a large alliance emblem embossed on it. It is only available to the alliance.

Vicious War Wolf - this is an unusual mount as it is a reward for three achievements – and becomes BoA so can be sent, once you receive it the 2nd and 3rd time, to other characters that you have. It is the reward for winning 75, then 200, then 300 rated battlegrounds. This large wolf, definitely slightly different in model to the normal wolves, is a pale grey with darker grey points and a knotted tail. The armour is wooden with metallic plates and a large metallic mask, with alliance (presumably human) skulls hanging from the back of the saddle. The panels on the armour are sewn together pieces of red leather.

Violet Proto-Drake – this is the reward for completing the “long strange trip” meta achievement which is for completing every single holiday achievement. The drake is a deep purple with black touches.

Volcanic Stone Drake - this stone drake, coloured a deep purple with orangey-red crystals and blue wing flaps, is a reward from the meta achievement for completing all the achievements required for the Glory of the Cataclysm Hero achievement.

Guild Achievement Rewards

Dark Phoenix – this mount, a reskin of the golden Ashes of A’lar mount, is a reward for the guild (buyable once you are exalted) once they have killed all Tier 11 bosses.

Golden King - this mount, alliance only, is available once your guild reaches Level 25. You must be exalted with your guild in order to buy the mount and it costs 1,500g. It is a lovely reskin of the normal lions in game with a lovely brown fur and luscious mane, and will always carry a banner that matches your guild tabard/icon.

Kor’kron Annihilator - this mount, horde only,  is available once your guild reaches Level 25. You must be exalted with your guild in order to buy the mount and it costs 1,500g. This mount is a scorpion, a very very large version of the scorpions in game that are mobs/critters. It has a dark brown skin with black claws and, as with the lion, has a banner with your guild icon.

Quest Rewards

Abyssal Seahorse - this seahorse is a reward for everyone who completes the first few quest lines in Vash’jir. Unfortunately this mount can only be used IN Vash’jir, so if you want a universal water mount, get ready to farm Poseidus (mentioned in the World Grinds section)

Crimson Deathcharger - this very special, very rare mount is a reskin of the death knight mount. This mount is available upon completion of the Shadowmourne legendary, which awards you several quests to hand items in and reap rewards – one of which is this horned, red armoured mount. This mount is BoE, and therefore sellable (I have one myself that was a gift!), and can go for a huge amount of money.

Venomhide Ravasaur - this is the Horde equivalent of the Winterspring Frostsaber, a reward from a 20 day long quest line where you nurture your raptor. Visually it is quite attractive, a chocolate brown back and head with paler brown underbelly and neck and neon green stripes.

White Polar Bear - this mount can drop from the quest reward bag when you complete the Hyldnir Spoils quest in Icecrown. There is a 3% chance it will drop from the bag, and actually a 0.3% chance it might drop from your Satchel of Exotic Mysteries as well. The bear is identical for horde and alliance, and is white (logically), with a chocolate brown armour matching the design of the other bears’. He has greeney-blue glowing eyes. This is probably, because LK is a past expansion now, one of the rarer mounts you’ll see around.

Winterspring Frostsaber - this mount is Alliance only and is a reward for completing a series of daily quests for 20 days, growing your wintersaber cub in to an adult. This mount does reward a Feat of Strength because the mount *used* to be incredibly difficult to get – it took a very very long grind. Model wise it is similar to the other unarmoured sabers but without the large teeth. It is pure white but with pale purple stripes.

Recruit A Friend

Swift Zhevra - this mount which was replaced by a 2 person rocket some time ago, was the second in game “unicorn”. It was a zebra, with a single brown horn. It was a reward for completing several steps of the “recruit a friend” program. THIS MOUNT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN GAME.

X-53 Touring Rocket – this mount, an awesome two person rocket with a grinning face painted on it, is available for those that complete the full recruit a friend process. It replaced the zhevra mentioned above.

Spectral Gryphon - this translucent, basic gryphon is quite attractive. It is a single use (ie, not across the whole account) mount that can be given to a single one of your characters if you can convince a friend to return to the game and pay for a single month of game time. This is alliance only. **added 3rd April 2012**

Spectral Wind Rider - this translucent, basic wind rider is also quite pretty, for a wind rider.  It is a single use (ie, not across the whole account) mount that can be given to a single one of your characters if you can convince a friend to return to the game and pay for a single month of game time. This is horde only. **added 3rd April 2012**

Blizzard Store

Celestial Steed – the first mount ever to be sold on the Blizzard Store, the celestial steed (or sparkle pony as it was known) caused a huge amount of drama and forum QQ and whatnot. It is automatically generated on every new character you create, and is a winged, flying horse made similar to the constellation mobs and statues of Ulduar. It has purple and gold armour along the head and back.

Heart of the Aspects - this mount is the first to enter the game that mimics the style of the new expansion, Mists of Pandaria. It is golden in colour and has a travel-sickness inducing flight that bobs up and down. It’s most striking features are not only its size (it’s very long) but also the fact its /mountspecial is do to a loop the loop in the air. **added 3rd April 2012**

Tyrael’s Charger – I’m putting this here because you do essentially pay Blizzard for it, but for a brief time if you subscribe for the Annual Pass you will get access to the Diablo 3 beta and this mount, which is absolutely gorgeous. Visually the horse is a dark, blue grey gorse with stunning golden armour and see through, shining, translucent wings. His hooves are white on the underside. and look to me (although it may just be perspective) to be much large than a normal horse. Like…it’s a bit like the Clydesdale of the WoW horse world.

Winged Guardian – this was the second mount to be introduced to the Blizzard store and is a sphinx like dark blue lion with golden trimmings and edgings. It can walk and fly and will be sent to all your characters. In the air it will flap its wings leaving streams of gold underneath it.

Blizzcon / Invitational

Big Blizzard Bear - this ground mount came from those who attended the Blizzcon Invitational in Paris in 2008. You can pick this up for £200 plus and it’s an extra special mount because it is a white unarmoured bear with a little tiny murloc carrying a flag sat on its head. It’s very very cool.
