Not That I’m One To Jump On A Bandwagon…

But It looks like we’re posting pets :P

These are my two:

n61402847_39924922_6905

This is Hollie. I’ve had her since October 2008. She’s a RSPCA rescue moggie, about 6 apparently. She hates other people, other cats, and being surprised. She likes food.

Hollie is named after the computer in Red Dwarf.

25215_759376896065_61402847_45571581_281314_n

And this is Caspar. I’ve had him since November 2009.

He is a pedigree chocolate point siamese, but also a rescue cat. He was my 23rd birthday present. He’s about 2.

He is very very very vocal, and thieves anything he can get his hand on. I repeat, he is very very vocal. Siamese have a totally different vocal range to other cats and Caspar likes to express it whenever possible.

He likes to make noise, carry around his favourite frog toy in his mouth, shed hairs everywhere and sleep between my body and the radiator at night.

He also likes to follow moving pictures across the TV screen with his foot.

Caspar was going to be called “Lister”, in keeping with my Red Dwarf theme, however I thought he was too elegant and pretty to name after a beer drinking, curry eating scouser.

They are my cats, anyway :)

March 8th – Silvermoon City, Eversong Woods

Silvermoon City is the home of the Blood Elves. It is located in Northeastern Eversong Woods within what is known as the kingdom of Quel’Thalas.

It is the largest of all the Horde cities, and houses the largest population of blood elves that still remain in Azeroth.

The city was once double its current size. The entire Western side of the city was destroyed by the Scourge during the Third War. The ruins of Silvermoon and the city itself are separated by the Dead Scar, which is the path Arthas and his undead army used when attempting to resurrect Kel’thuzad.

History

The City of Silvermoon was originally founded by the high elves thousands of years ago after their arrival in Lordaeron. It was constructed from white stone and living plants, much in the same style as ancient kaldorei civilisations.

Central hubs in the city were the Academies of Silvermoon – a centre of learning of Arcane magic, and Sunstrider Spire, the home of the Royal family of the high elves. The ruling body of Silvermoon – the Convocation – also lived here.

The Second War left the city relatively untouched. The magi used the powers of the Sunwell to protect the city with a magical barrier, however the Third War was very different. Arthas and the scourge pushed through the city in their attempt to reach the Sunwell, capturing the city.

They kept the city whilst draining it off its resources, however left once they had finished with the place. Leaving the buildings mostly intact gave a ghost-town feel to the place for a long time.

Silvermoon was taken back by the blood elves, using new magics taught to them by Grand Magister Rommath. They reconstructed the Eastern side of the city to its former glory, however the Wretched still control the Western part of the city.

There is a massive amount of arcane energy that has been used to reconstruct the city, and cai

The March Funnies & Single Abstract Noun

I’ve decided to combine these two together because the creation of Single Abstract Noun has certainly added towards my laughter count many many times over the past few days.

I’m pretty sure everyone knows what SAN is about by now but if not, mosey on over to visit Tam, cos he started it all off!

Anyhow.

What’s made me smile over the past month?

Firstly…

Jae1

I decided I should sing along to something to distract Jae. I do believe I selected “Don’t Stop Believing’ by Journey. She spent the rest of the day trying to embed a variety of terrible pop songs into my head…

Lew2The joys of being a paladin healer, hey Zal?

Mike1This gives all druids permission to log on to Terenas, find my boyfriend and berate him for describing trees as “smelly moth eaten tree things”. Berate away, fellow trees.

WoWScrnShot_021410_112859

This is what happens if you’re a draenei paladin honoring Elders in horde territory…, ‘flyby honoring’. Sounds like some sort of shooting incident!

WoWScrnShot_021410_200742

I was explaining Putricide to our rogue in terms I thought made it clearest…

WoWScrnShot_021710_214819

The worst bit is I cannot remember how we got into this conversation, but I am most DEFINITELY not up for some ‘girl on dead blue girl’ action, and I also learnt a little something about my raid leaders :P

Zal was having a tough time tanking baby instances on his warrior.

I maintain if he’d picked a better race (female gnum warrior? On what planet does that work?) things wouldn’t have been anywhere near as hard.

WoWScrnShot_030210_201731

You know, he doesn’t even have to try. That one made me snort food everywhere. Thanks Zal <3

I think I need to complain to someone about harassment or something…

Oh, Single Abstract Noun, how you amuse me…

I cant even remember what we were talking about, but from now on, wepwep = reverse pewpew.

I think we all know somebody with Curse of Annoying, right?

Discussing the formation of Abstract Noun and the fact there are lots of female bloggers out there, apparently :P

WoWScrnShot_030510_230841

This isn’t a funny, more of an awesome. My first encounter with another SANer in Silvermoon.

New terminology – Tam the Tonkadin. He has shield, will travel.

Zal1

I don’t quite know why I wanted to catch Zal, but apparently it’ll be harder than anticipated!

Zal3

And this is where Wingus and Dingus comes from. Festergut and Rotface will always be known as Wingus and Dingus now.

Zal4

Apparently, raids are more important than boyfriends :P

Anyway.

I hope some of these gave you a giggle, thank you to all the SAN-EU members and of course Zal and Jae for providing me with hours of entertainment!

Progression & Feeling Vindicated

Last night was a really, really good night.

We had no raid on Friday, we were a couple of people down, however on Wednesday we’d taken down Lower Spire and Wingus and Dingus (Festergut and Rotface for those not au fait with the lingo). So, last night, we cleared some trash and faced the Blood Prince Council.

And, we got him down.

WoWScrnShot_030710_204645

Our team was made up of 3 exceptional tanks (1 prot warrior, Grags, and 2 bears, Groulinis and Dhearic, Groul of which did an absolutely exceptional job of taking the shadow ball thingies), 2 healers (myself and Zalduun), and 5 DPS (Nyo (moonkin), Kabooms (the mage of the exploding strudels), Hammerhands (hunter), Rydia (Unholy DK) and Shamubar (a melee shammy – neither me or Nyo can remember whether that’s Elemental or Enhancement).

As Zal says, it was a stressful fight. We were all working our butts off, and a few things really helped us on our way:

  • There are 2 kinetic bombs on 10 man. Our first few tries we missed the second one, but once we realised there was two, our ranged handled them brilliantly.
  • You do not need a caster tank. Take a ‘real’ tank. It is doable with 5 DPS, and the fight wasn’t massively lengthy. The presence of a bear tank with 60k HP on made the pressure on us a lot easier, meaning we could safely…
  • Use two healers.

We had a great composition and a great raid, fantastic add management, fantastic tanking, people paying attention and it all came together, netting us the guild first Blood Prince Council kill, and also the BPC section of the meta-achievement.

Congratulations, Flames!

WoWScrnShot_030710_204246

We then, as one would do in this situation, moved on to Blood Queen Lana’thel. Who is spectacular. You know, I enjoy raiding. I love Flames, and I love my guildies. That’s why I love raiding.

But last night? I loved me. Those that know me will know I don’t have what could be ever called confidence in my own abilities. But last night, I rocked. I’ve actually changed how I raid recently. I’ve started paying a lot more attention, being a bit more serious about it all, possibly contributing a little more. And I do feel good for it. Last night was a prime example of that.

Now I know we have the buff. The buff is great. I am all for the buff, and every other blogger in the world has either complained or cheered the buff, so you don’t need my reasons too. I’m not a “serious” blogger in that sense.

So I know the buff certainly added towards last night’s performance, but I’m not going to let that detract from our awesomeness.

When the Lich King was defeated for the first time, and numbers started to be released on DPS figures, HPS figures and whatnot, I took interest.

Now, I’m competitive. I shouldn’t be – if I wanted to blast numbers, I should have rolled a paladin.

I’m comfortable with my niche. My synergy with Zal is awesome – we yin and yang, my HoTs cover the little spaces and his big blasts of light cover the big gaps. I’m used to my smaller numbers. It’s how things work. But Lana’thel is just…amazing. It is the most druid friendly fight I’ve ever seen, and cos of it, I felt like I could shine.

On the try where we actually got Lana’thel down to 10%, I was putting out 7.7k HPS. Now, when Paragon defeated the Lich King on 25man, their top output healer was putting out 4024 HPS. It made me think – I can do this, we can do this.

And I really hope we do.

I was on such a high.

I cannot wait until next week where we get to have another crack at her and hopefully get her down.

The second part of this post’s title is feeling vindicated. I’m the only druid main spec healer in our guild.

I don’t like Elitist Jerks – I’m not good with theorycrafting and numbers. To be honest, I suck at maths. I find the site confusing, complicated, lengthy and…full of obnoxious idiots. Ahem.

My research comes from blogs. I read so many druid blogs that I feel like it comes out of my ears sometimes. I find an idea. I look at that idea. I spend a long time reading everyones opinions on that idea. And then I follow it through.

And also, I have this obsession with socket bonuses. I don’t like grey text on my character sheet. I like my sockets to all make sense.

So. I read about the GotEM nerf. I didn’t understand it. But what I DID understand was that I needed a respec. Because I’d spent a long time working towards a system where I could get 5 rejuvenations into one Wild Growth cooldown. And I wasn’t quite there. So, with this change, I’d be even further away!

So, off to Moonglade I went. Me and the trainer had a chat, and I suddenly became the proud owner of the Celestial Focus talent. And then, the lovely druid bloggers of the world told me that there was this nice round number – 856 – that would mean that my spec could shift from this, back into points I liked having – like Living Seed. So I had something to aim for! So. I spent some money, I bought some gems, and I was at about 600 haste. So far away! I cried. But I’ve inched my way there, and with the purchase of my Vestments of Spruce and Fir, I passed that 856 number. Now, I was casting so fast, I barely had time to move across pitbull to my next person to cast again before the GCD had reset.

I was elated! However not a lot changed. Because our healing team works they way it does, although I personally noticed a change, I highly doubt anybody else did!

But Lana’thel, giving raid healers a chance to shine, allowed me to shine. It allowed me to say YES I am right for choosing this piece of gear and not having the 4set bonus (until testing proves me wrong, I won’t be investing. I favour the haste more than the crit, and to be honest although the 4pc may be fabulous for 25 man raiders, I already HAVE a rejuvenation on every single target almost all the time anyway, making it…a bit crap. FotP is about to embark on some 25 man raiding, and this may make me change my mind, but for now…no thanks), I am right for gemming as I gemmed to get my haste up, for choosing the spec I chose, for enchanting how I enchanted.

I felt proud of my research, I felt proud of myself and I felt proud of my character. That never happens, and I’m still elated and buzzed up today.

Long live haste, long live druid healers and long live feeling good about myself. I only wished it happened more often!

I know my druid, and I’m pleased about it. I just want to say, my eternal gratitude does go out to all the druid bloggers out there whose careful explanations, well written posts and fabulous drawings, because without them I’d have been left totally stranded.

March 6th/7th – Observance Hall, Utgarde Pinnacle

WoWScrnShot_050109_181830The Observance Hall in Utgarde Pinnacle is the home of Svala Sorrowgrave. Svala was once a vrykul (whose culture and shape I discussed in February when I wrote about Skorn.

She is however, when you enter the room, in discussions with the Lich King. We do not know what about, but Svala has completed a great task for the Lich King, which causes him to transform her into a Val’kyr.

Her first mission as a val’kyr is to destroy the group of intruders who have entered Utgarde Pinnacle.

Val’kyr themselves are undead vrykul. They are a relatively recent additionWoWScrnShot_050109_181827 to the armies of the scourge, and act as the Lich King’s ambassadors in the spirit world. They are described as “fearsome creatures made of pure nightmare”.

Val’kyr are created from female vrykul who accept the lich king’s “gift”. Valkyrion Aspirants can be found at Valkyrion, as can Nascent Valkyrion.

Val’kyr also appear to judge fights and battles, deciding if one can become a vargul or ymirjar, and they also ‘judge’ fallen vrykul.

WoWScrnShot_030610_002705

Kolramas is a fallen necropolis, based in Zul’Drak. The necropolis was brought down by the Drakkari, but all of the scourge within were not destroyed.

Now the nerubians that inhabit the area are raising fallen Argent Crusade soldiers. They need to be stopped.

March 4th – Nat’s Landing, Dustwallow Marsh

WoWScrnShot_030610_001917Nat’s Landing is the location of the famous Nat Pagle, a fisherman who fishes off the same point on a little island near Theramore, in Dustwallow Marsh.

Nat Pagle

Nat Pagle is a truly exceptional individual.

You can also find Nat in the Caverns of Time, if you enter the portal linking to old-Durnholde. Here Nat can be found talking to a friend, Hal McAllister, discussing a variety of dreams he’s had.

He discusses dreaming about two gangsters creating strawberry flavoured ice-cream and then disappearing through a portal into another world (referencing Tigule and Foror), the Battle of Mount Hyjal and the destruction of Archimonde by elves and wisps, the taking of Tarren Mill by the undead, and the conversion of Arthas into the Lich King.

He also dreams about moving to Kalimdor and being frequently visited by people of many races who treat him like a fishing god…WoWScrnShot_030610_002705

If you have chance, take a look at Nat’s WoWWiki page – it’s great and the conversation snippits he has with Hal are really funny.

The Great Flames of the Phoenix Scavenger Hunt

WoWScrnShot_022510_191202

Flames assemble for the kick off...

Flames turned 5 years old on February 12th 2010.

Five years and one of the longest active guilds on Terenas. I joined Flames of the Phoenix after ejecting myself from major guild drama on April 17th 2008. I had only raided in one guild, I had my full ilvl213 set of gear, I was used to be lead healer and essentially healing officer. I was wearing everything BiS from Naxxramas and was ready to roll into Ulduar with a new guild and a new lease on my Warcraft life.

WoWScrnShot_022510_191228In an effort to get away from my old guild, I’d even changed my character name. I couldn’t quite bring myself to server transfer, however. I had my old rogue friend, Baruch, my early warrior pal, Sophista, and a host of other chaps I didn’t want to leave behind.

On June 5th, just two months later, I stupidly changed guild again, back to a splinter of my first raiding guild. The guilt I felt for having left them made my silly “conscious” flare up, and I changed guilds once more. As soon as the option came available, I also name changed again – Elsen I was once more. Espreya wasn’t my character, she didn’t suit it. I stuck it out for 3 and a half months, and went back to Flames of the Phoenix on September 19th 2009, and hopefully this is where I will stay for the rest of my Warcraft career.

WoWScrnShot_022510_212818

I hid in the Barrens...

I use my story to illustrate that of a lot of Flamers. You come, something calls you away, but you always come back. There’s something about the place that just makes it all quite right. And of course I’m glad I came back – I’d never have met Mike or developed what we have now without the place. I’m pleased about my time away – I met two very special friends during my time in Respice, Jaedia of the Lazy Sniper and Zalduun, my partner in healing crime and little brother. But Flames is where I’m meant to be, and I think is in many ways the perfect fit for so many people and players.

Which is why we decided to celebrate the 5 years Flames had been existence with a bit of a party. I have to admit, I went straight to Beru for ideas, as I remember reading her 5th anniversary post about Monolith’s celebrations.

We decided on a Scavenger Hunt.

Nyo found me first

Nyo found me first

7 teams competed, each of 2. We had:

1. Team WTFHeroism (our resident shammy Shamubar and my healing partner the lovely Zalduun),

2. Team Boomkin and dead blue thing (named/partnered by Nyo, our moonkin raid leader, with Mike, his housemate, my boyfriend, resident draenei DK)

3. Team Mad Moon Monsters (Jaedia and Madmac, one of our mages)

4. Team Moose (Stug the paladin, Darkstarelf the feral kitty and Cerbie the DK)

5. Team Vanilla (Astrelle, m’pocket tank, and his sister Windleaf)

WoWScrnShot_022510_215150

Team WTFHeroism

6. Team Exploding Strudels (Kabooms, our queen exporter of Exploding Strudels, and Dhearic, our tanking druid)

and finally

7. Team Chopped Up – assembled at the last minute by two of the people whose team members disappeared (Yanader, our suicidal mage, and Mirielle, another of our DKs).

The judges and adjudicators were myself and Meylenne, our GM.

We assembled on Stormwind steps, and allocated the teams to the judges. Under my control were teams 1, 2, 4 and 7, Meylenne watched over teams 3, 5 and 6.

Most people were ready on vent, and “bang on 7pm” (in actuality, it was about 7:15), the questions were released on the forums as a post.

Nyo and Rydia hand in (yes, my boyfriend is a death knight in a bunny suit)

The questions were as follows:

1. We hear that the great Prophet may soon be under attack from the Dark Ranger. Rush to the Exodar and tell me how many Shields of Velen protect him.

2. I once heard of a great dwarven warrior by the name of Grags (replaced by “suicidal mage named Yanader”). I demand you find him, /spit, /flirt or /kiss him and bring me a screenshot as proof of your kill!

3. Tyrande, the beautiful night elf priestess, has become a tad vain recently. Please check if her hair still is the jet black it always was.

4. The murlocs of Azeroth are slowly driving me insane. Contribute to our war effort and bring me 20 murloc eyes. I would also like to see the one called Cookie dead. Bring me proof of his death in the shape of his tenderizer, stirring rod, or if you cannot find those, a screenshot of his death.

5. I’m hungry. I’d like a Delicious Chocolate Cake, please. You will receive extra points for baking it in front of me when you hand in your completed hunt form.

Yanader and Mirielle reach the finishing line...

6. A special family are currently living in the inn on the outskirts of old-Stratholme (pre-culling). They are a family of four – 2 men, woman and child. Visit them and tell me their names. Provide a screenshot.

7. This same family suffered a terrible fate at the hands of the scourge. Visit them as they are in the present day. We will require photographic proof. Provide a screenshot of each (3 out of 4 will do)

8. I would like a Stratholme Lily. Bring me one.

Our teams had until 10pm UK time to find myself and Mey (Mey was hidden in cat form deep in the deadmines, I skulked on a bed in the back corner of Ratchet), bake their chocolate cake in front of us and officially “hand in” their answers (send them me over MSN, essentially).

Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves. I tried to include a large variety of questions, and demanding the inclusion of screenshots did mean people couldn’t cheat and wowhead an answer, and the necessity of some soulbound items meant the AH couldn’t be extorted too much.

I did see some great claims in trade, “LF All Ingredient for a Chocolate Cake! C.O.D. it to me for 100g but you must include ALL ingredients!!!” and those desperately hunting out a tailor; “WILL PAY 200G FOR WHITE WOOLEN DRESS!”.

We had a nice selection of prizes: one sandbox tiger loot card, one Path of Cenarius lootcard, and 5 hatchlings.

The Eventual Winners:

And I'm really glad people had fun!

5. Team Mad Moon Monsters: 155 Points

Progression and an Update

Lots has happened, and lots is happening, in real life, in WoW, and in the blogosphere.

As I sit here, drinking diet coke out of a Jussi Jaaskelainen testimonial year mug (ten awesome points if you know who that is), I realise I’ve been doing a lot of pondering and reflecting over the past few days.

This was obviously mostly inspired by Tam, who made me remember once again why I am so truly, truly lucky to have Flames. We have our ups and downs, we have the odd bit of drama, the odd argument. But on the whole, we get on very well together.

The guild has created loving relationships, friendships, partnerships, networks unlike any I’ve known. The bond that brings us all together is a love of World of Warcraft.

I talk about my friends a lot on here – those I’m sadly not raiding with (*points at Jaedia), those I’ve dragged across Terenas (*points at my little brother and in game confidante, Zalduun), those for whom I have infinite amounts of respect and admiration (*points at Nyo), and that one who I love with every bit of my girly heart (*points at Mike). It’s gotta be love to pass on a Zulian tiger, right?

We’re currently going through a bit of a revamp site wise at Flames, and I’m in the process of, with the design skills of Zal and the critical eye of Nyo, designing us a whole new website in order to increase our online presence and online community, and maybe convince some people to hop cross realm and join us in Flames.

I’m also looking forward to the prospect of a new raiding alliance with another guild on our server – I like 25 mans and from an officers chat last night I think we might have found some like minded people who would be up for progressing into ICC25. To be honest, I’m totally still up for ToC 25 and Ony. And Ulduar. And Naxx.

I’m revelling in my new officer position. I love having a job to do. I like making fish feasts, making flasks, stocking up the bank and providing a service. I like the prospect of designing a new site, bringing in some new people, showing off the tag under my name with real pride like I always have done, but it has that little bit of extra meaning to it now. I love /o, and the moderator’s section of the forum, I love being there if people want to ask something and I love how my guildies have accepted me into this role and seem pleased I’m doing it.

And my fun runs. I’m loving them right now. My current plan is to run something on a Saturday and a Sunday ideally – but only one of those days if need be. So far we have taken ten people into Kara and had a whale of a time getting lost in the spires, 18 into AQ40 and steamrolled the place without even wiping on twins ;) , and 10 of us entered Blackwing Lair a fortnight ago. This weekend I’m running Karazhan on Saturday and AQ40 again on Sunday, and next week we’re going to attempt Sunwell – but if it doesn’t go well I will probably try and squoosh us over into something else, I know Sunwell will still be a challenge! I like it that people are started to expect something in the calendar and that everyone who has been has enjoyed it, enjoyed the banter on vent and enjoyed the run itself.

It’s a nice way of integrating our social members who don’t raid into the guild and the group a little more.

Personally, I also feel like I’ve progressed in WoW.

I have a new death knight, as I hated my dwarf, she’s a night elf by the name of Ellenaie. She is currently parked in Stromwind, levelling her inscription! She is at 205 and it is costing me a bit because I’m too lazy to go back and…reverse herb, so to speak.

My priest is still at 35, with 300 leatherworking and tailoring, but my hunter is now level 61 (after a lovely boost through Scholo and Strat by Mike), 326 in herbing and 351 in jewelcrafting. I really want to push her through the next 50 herbing points so I can again let her settle until level 68 when I can take her into Northrend for the final push. After that it’ll be time for the death knight – 7 levels on her to 65 so she can max her inscription out. And then finally back on to the priest.

Elsen wise, ever faithful Elsen, is still an skinner/miner.

Last night in our trip into ICC she hit exalted with the Ashen Verdict, got her lovely ring and gemmed it, gemmed her new neck piece and her cloth bracers. I have no idea what my gearscore is as if I do want to know what my gear is I look at my Gear Rating (averages out all the ilvls of your gear). Either way it pinged up a few numbers last night which was very satisfying. My next frost badge purchase is going to be a cloak, as I do really really need a replacement for my 219 level one *ahem*.

In Elsen’s list of “things to do”, there is:

Thorium Brotherhood rep: 1750/3000 at the moment – purchased 960 Dark Iron Residue and I currently have 37 out of the necessary 71 lava cores/fiery cores/etc that I will need to zip through the entire thing without having to move. Definitely getting there on that one.

Wintersabre rep: plan on doing roughly 700 rep a day – it will take me 60 days to reach exalted.

Argent Tournament: 59 more days of dailies to get everything I want to buy with seals.

Sha’tari Skyguard: 37 days to get to exalted

Netherwing: roughyl 30 days to get to exalted.

She has a lot of things to do…

Anyway, normal tourism service will be resumed soon, and if anyone has any particularly good platforms they’ve used for a guild website please do let me know…

Thanks

March 3rd – K3, Storm Peaks

WoWScrnShot_030410_113032K3 is a neutral goblin base in the Storm Peaks, in Northrend.

Similar to other goblin towns, the place is surrounded by a low wall and contains many different types of vendor.

The Goblins

(This does not include information about the playable Goblin race).

Goblins are described as small humanoids. They are usually a green colour, and are stereotypically heavily interested in commerce and technology. The societies themselves seem to have quite a strict hierarchy.

The other races of Azeroth regard the goblins as the prime users of technology. It is undecided as to whether this is an advantage or a curse – to be technology users in a world of magic. Whilst the gnomes and the dwarves are all heavy users of technology, it is the goblins that push the boundaries of the natural world.WoWScrnShot_030410_113024

Goblins have swift realised that firepower results in control and control results in gold – meaning they constantly strive to produce and create greater and more powerful forms of ammunition and weaponry. However the general lazy attitude of the race means working conditions are both slow and meandering, resulting in many deaths for goblin tinkerers.
